Coach Shawna - Head Coach & Owner
I started Jiu Jitsu in 2008, under professor Supa Dave Rothwell and received my Blue Belt in 2009. At Pacific Top Team Vancity, under professor John Thompson, I received my Purple Belt. Then in 2023 I received my Brown Belt under professor Mike LaPierre, Valley Jiu Jitsu.
Professors Supa Dave Rothwell, John Thompson and Mike LaPierre are all Pacific Top Team members.
Outside of the gym I have my Masters in Curriculum and have facilitated learning in a variety of subject matter areas (including jiu jitsu) and taught subject matter experts(SME) best practices in education. I bring decades of experience in teaching and learning, based on research, to the mats.
I have my Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW), which means I'm certified to teach the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW). This international credential that is respected in the education sphere, as a best practice for facilitating learning.
Not all subject matter experts(jiu jitsu is a subject matter) can share their knowledge in a logical, accessible format, so that the learners can learn.
My job is to create a seamless learning experience, without gaps. My goal is to make the complex or challenging easy, fun and safe, while at the same time doing it in a way were you can apply your new knowledge into real time rolling, and competing, if that's an interest.
Your job is to show up with a learning attitude, and do your best! (and of course have fun)
